Default Does anyone know the legal requirement for the distance an officer must follow a suspect before

issuing a citation for speeding based upon pacing?

I received a citation for speeding in Tyson's Corner and the road I was on was, at most, 200 meters long.

Default It varies by jurisdiction. You can make an inquiry with the local PD. It should be a matter of

public information and they should be obligated to tell you.

Default well, math is math, whether he got you with 30 feet or 500 feet. Distance divided by time equal

speed.

Its not MPHAFF (Miles Per Hour After Five Hundred Feet).

This is exactly what a radar gun does. Except it gets your speed in a matter of a millisecond, equaling about a distance of 1 foot.

I forget what its called now, but they used to have this device in the car for doing pacing radar. Like some buttons. And when you pass, say, a road sign, he clicks button a. when he clicks it, he clicks button b. when you pass another sign, he clicks a., then when he passes the exact one, he hits b. It does the math instantly, says your speed, its more accurate than "pacing" alone, and viola, he has your speed and is giving you a ticket. They can do this as far as a quarter mile behind you.

and aircraft simply do a distnace divided by time calculation. they watch you go over one spot (usually a line in the road, or other mark), then time you to the next, does the math, and they tell the cops down the way to get that Blue Audi when it comes around for 73 mph.

Default It's not technically "statutory," since I don't see anything in the Va.statutes about this matter.

I think it is a matter of official policy, as I said below.

You are right to assume that they must have a set policy / procedure for how long they must follow you for, otherwise the traffic court wouldn't uphold it as being consistent with "due process."

I'm not a traffic law expert, but I'm also not BS-ing here; this is based on my personal experience with traffic law and knowledge of Va. law in general. :-P

Default OMG, you're the bird brain with the retarded question, and you call me on "BS"

fvck you, pal. Just becaused you dont like the answer YOU were seeking, don't turn ***** on me.

So, as soon as you post proof somewhere that there is a mandatory distance (still makes laugh writing that), then I will gladly play the *******. Until then, it's you.
