Snow tires?

Snow tires?
Thinking of 2009 A6 3.0T and wondering if midwesterners buy snow tires the quattros. I'm comfortable driving Wisconsin and Michigan snows with FWD, but I need to do a lot of poorly-plowed driving. So, I'm trying to convince myself that an A6 quattro with snow tires can perform similar to an SUV (*not* trying to start a better/worse fight). Otherwise, I'll need to consider an SUV. Any thoughts? I assume the A6 can hold its own, but am also trying to see if winter tires are even necessary if you get good all-season tires.

I always by an extra set of wheels and a good set of snow tires. Usually the Nokian Haakapellitas (if I can afford them in the correct size). Having snow tires makes a huge difference to how well it will handle snow. If you're on plowed roads, and you don't mind waiting occasionally, all seasons will work well. If you have to get some place, get a set of snow tires. Even if you just use them to avoid the fool with the bald summer tires, it's worth it.

SUV will give you ground clearance over the A6 though. You might consider a Q5 or a allroad if your roads are bad.
