1993 100CS Quattro Engine Temp Problem
About 1 year ago my thermostat failed resulting in overheating and subsequent head gasket failure.Head gaskets, waterpump and new thermostat installed......however since that time the engine has twice overheated in traffic when the fan has failed to come on...I have forced it on by turning on the compressor and the car is fine. I thought the problem was with the fan switch located in the radiator but, diagnosis says that the radiator is only getting to 130 degrees when the engine is ready to overheat and therefore the radiator temp switch would never come on......Repair place who I marginally trust says the "new" thermostat is bad e.g. only partially open and must be replaced (Approx $150.00)......The thermostsat is effectivly brand new....does this make sence???? Any other ideas or thoughts????Thanks for your help....Dick

It's possible and fits the profile, but $150? Even for the V6...
...that can't be right. Thermo should be less than $20 and you can probably replace it yourself if you are even marginally mechanically inclined. Sorry, I don't know where it is on the V6.

Getting to the Thermostat...
is a bear on the V6-12 valve. You have to remove and re-tension belts, etc. Not at all easy. My pretty good mechanic took about 2 hrs to do it. But in any case, it should be much less than $150 for the part itself.

Pic of thermostat in 12v V6.....
...it's a little nasty to get at (it's near the t-belt). Not quite as nice as the 5cyl!!
