Default 5000 Intercooler & MFTS

Hi- I've "rescued" and IC from a '86 5K Turbo that I'd like to use on my Merkur XR4Ti. I notice that there is a temperature sensor (MFTS) mounted into this IC - does anyone know what the transfer function on this thing looks like? I might be able to use it in some creative way.

Also, what kind of pressure do these things hold up to? I'm a little concerned about the fact that this thing uses plastic glued-on tanks since I'll be running boost pressure upwards of 18 lbs. Thoughts?

Thanks,

The end tanks can't take it.

Default Re: What's the limit?

What's the stock boost limit on this motor?

Any real experience for what the boost threshold is for the tanks?

Thanks,

Default I have run 1.8bar absolute with a BOV without problems.

Without a BOV things start to come apart. I still blow the Samco TBB off regularly. You can take the tanks off and JB Weld them back on to run more boost.

1.8 bar is 26 psi. Are you sure it won't hold 18 psi(1.25 bars)??

Default Re: I'll have a BOV

I'll most surely have a BOV (1.25" Mitsu'), so it's sounding more like 18PSI won't be a problem. I haven't quite figured out how I might plumb in the BOV though - any thoughts on whether the plastic is thick enough on the tank to drill and tap for a 1.25" NPT?

Default Absolute, i.e. not relative, is in reference to a true vacuum.

1bar absolute equals 0.9869 Atmospheres or 29.53inHg. Watch the weather, when they say that it is 29.95inHg and rising due to a high pressure system entering the area they are talking ABSOLUTE.

Relative is in relation to ambient. If it is 1.05bar absolute outside and you are running 0.6bar relative of boost then you are running 1.65bar absolute of boost. Relative measures of boost do not directly affect performance, however they do affect intake plumbing directly.

Newbies to Audi turbocharging toss around realtive numbers for boost levels. Old school people, like many on this particular forum, use absolute numbers. This may be in part due to the fact that the digital boost gauges in our cars read absolute bar.
