Default 5000CS- Dash and columb lights intermittant - Relay location???

Anyone had this. My dash lights at night flutter and go dark all the time. The columb lights do this too but seperately from the dash lights. When the lights are working correctly on the dash and columb the reostat on the trip computer works just fine and the dash and columb lights will dim.If the dash lights are out and the columb lights are on the restat has no effect on the visible lights. After the car warms up they both almost always go out. If I sit in the passenger front and bump the dash I can get them to kick off. I cannot find a relay anywhere????? Help!!!

Default Probably not a relay....

Sounds like a bad headlight switch/rheostat. It's cheap enough to where you can replace it as a good first step, and if that doesn't fix it, good luck with the wiring. I don't think the dash lights are on a relay, the draw is low enough that there's no danger of frying a circuit.

Check your license plate lights too, if one of them is burned out or has bad contacts your dash lights won't work.

Default Thanks - tried those items already.

One of the first things I looked for was the license plate illumination. All is OK there.
And I didn't think there was a relay for the dash lights but I thought I would ask anyway. The reostat is part of the clock-computer unit and I was not dying to buy one for a test. Hmmmmmm
I will take another look at the reostat.
I appreciate it.

Default Check the Glove comparment lights too...

you'll be amazed at what effect blown taillights or GC lights can cause on those cars. If those check out OK. Move to wiring...

Default Oh yeah...

also try turning the light illumination dial up and down a couple of times. I've heard that they stick and can cause weird problems too...

Default I had this one...

and it is the light control module. It is located above the glove box, a box maybe two inches square. There are 2 PC boards inside with a ribbon cable running between them. The solder connections on the ribbon cable let go causing the two light circuits to go intermittant. I just took mine apart (it snaps together, like much of the car) and soldered the connections. It is an easy fix if you can solder. Good luck with it.

Yes, most likely the dash light controller as posted above
