90s overheating- water pump or thermostat- how to get to?
I have changed the fan switch at the radiator. Water is hot at the top hose but cool at the bottom, hence conclusion: no water circulation. Switch never gets hot enough to activate fans. I am leaning towards a bad thermostat rather than a water pump and hope someone can lend there knowledge of the correct procedure for removal and replacement.

I would start with the thermostat and go from there. It's the...
...least expensive, most common, and easiest problem to solve. Don't ever let the car overheat badly while testing, BTW! I'm not sure where the thermo is on the V6, but it shouldn't be hard to find and replace.
If the thermo doesn't do it, then the next thing would probably be the radiator being clogged. Usually though, this is only a problem if you haven't maintained your cooling system. The fact that the the water is hot on top and cold on bottom kind of makes the radiator suspicious, but it's not conclusive and the thermo is still easier and less expensive.
You'll know when you get water flosing, becuase as the car heats up you'll be able to pinch a hose and feel the water moving. Don't forget to check the hoses too, as they can come apart internally and cause blockage there or send the debris to your radiator where it will almost surely clog things up. If a hose is easy to pinch and soft feeling, it's toast.
