a4 cold start-up
on cold marnings my 1998 a4 2.8 30v makes sounds that emulate a knocking. almost like valve lifters and the valves are not being lubricated. it lasts for a fraction of a second. the dealer has said it is caused from the motor having so many moving parts not getting enough oil before start-up. what kind of explanation is that? is it doing damage? have you heard of this before? please inform. also, my car seems to have the worst damage from acid rain while the car sat on the dealerships lot waiting for sale. am i stuck with that or do you think the dealership should take care of the damage.<p>

My 30V Avant feels quiet on initial startup. If it's a fraction of a second, think you're worrying too much. keep bringing it up every service; if it gets worse, tell 'em.<p>If it had acid rain while sitting to be sold, WHY COMPLAIN ABOUT IT NOW??? WHY DIDN'T YOU COMPLAIN DURING NEGOTIATIONS OR PASS ON IT? Ever hear of "Caveat emptor"?

Your dealer is telling the truth, as difficult...
...as that may be to believe. Some valve noise is normal at cold startup, but it should go away within a few seconds. <p>As for the acid rain. I agree with Ray. You should have taken care of that before buying the car. If it's not too bad, a good detail shop should be able to buff that out, and it shouldn't cost that much. You can try to get the dealership to help you out, but they aren't really obligated to do so if you've had the car very long. <p>Good luck!<p>Charles<br>
