Re: "Silver Arrows"
Silver is/was Germany's national racing color (before Tide and Coors were plastered on cars). AutoUnion and Mercedes were used as by Hitler to show off Germany's superior technical ability and boost national pride. The funding and etc was coming from the same pot- the German govt.
Since AU and Mercedes were the 2 powerhouses of Germany, they ran the Grand Prix events and usually the only real competition were each other.
With the German split after WWII, Mercedes was forunate to be on the west side and was able to proper. Auto Union was on the east side and was not rebuilt. The 'new' AU was formed (1949?) from scratch and was really just building 2 stroke cars. When the 4 stroke cars were being build, Audi was revived and given the upscale market.
