BFG R1 tire pressure questions
guys, what's a good tire pressure to run the R1's in autox on a relatively cold day (ie, below 10 degrees C)? will they even grip? or should i stay w/ my RE92's?
the autox surface is rough asphalt (used to be a runway) and the runway somewhat dictates the course to have a lot of slaloms followed by a few fast sweepers, if that helps.

I am running BFG g-force R1s now...I try to get 40 hot front...42 hot rear
With it being cold...you could probably start real close to that pressure...and right after your run check pressures and raise/lower appropriately. Good luck.

Mine didn't last long.
I got two days from my BFG R1s. I hope you do better. My fronts corded right along the center with quite a bit of rubber left on the outside edges. So I think my pressures were to high.
I was running 38 hot in front and 40 hot in back. Steve's suggestion will probably wear the center ridge even faster. You probably want to shoot more for 36 hot in front and set the rear to give you a good handling balance.
Enjoy the incredible stick.

The "Groove of Death"...
Well known behavior of R1's to eat the center when the pressures were too low....know among the racer community as the "Groove of Death". Although it's counter-intuitive, you needed more air.

Is this problem with the entire G-Force line?
When I had my old car(Ford SVT Contour) I went through a front set of BFG G-Force KDWs in a weekend do to a horrible center patch wearing out of them

More air...
...will make the tires live longer. If you're concerned about life, you want to keep them from rolling over on the sidewalls. Try Steve's suggestion, but don't be afraid to go even higher. Steve's pressure are probably his preference for maximum grip. Less grip but longer life can be found at higher pressures.
You'd run away screaming in terror if I told you what pressures I normally run in a FWD race car.
To SoCalOCTT: Don't know diddly about the KD's. As a street tire, they're built with a totally different carcass than the R1's, so you're guess is as good as mine.

Re: The "Groove of Death"...
I corded one of mine at Topeka. The sweeping left carousel turn (3?) was rough so I had lowered my tire pressures a bit on the recommendation of an instructor to keep the car from bouncing around. Ended up cording my right front tire. Didn't consider that I had taken the pressure too low on my BFGs.

Bouncing around - threw me off course in Sear's Point. The BFG's behave weird with my suspension...
I brought two sets of tires that day, and after what we thought was a bad rear shock, was cured when I slapped the Kuhmos on. So, I just have them sitting here after only two uses.
