With the F1 night race in Singapore this year, would it be a novel idea that the US would follow?
I mean, Road Atlanta is set up for night racing. I would think it could get it's garages in order to attract an F1 race. And with the crowd that gathers for Petit LeMans, I would think that F1 would draw just as many people. I think it would be pretty cool if they could pull something like that off 2009 or 2010.

Road Atlanta would take a lot of money to get it up to F1 standards for racing.
There are no stands....no garages...no bathrooms to speak of. Panoz would have to put big time money into RA....I like the idea of F1 coming to the States again... not sure Panoz would want all the politics that comes with F1.

2nd that. Went to the USGP in 07. Would take $150M at least to get a track ready for an F1.
I've never been to Road Atlanta, but I went to the USGP and saw what they did to get "state of the art" relative to current F1 expectations for track safety and the garages.
Here's my thought experiment. Take Sears Point, which Bruton Smith has already spent a lot of money fixing up (did a good job). Now make it F1 ready - $150-$250M if not more.

Take it from me....Indy is far better all the way around than Road Atlanta...
Really...Tony George did a good job on getting his track ready for F1....too bad they couldn't come to an agreement. Although...have to remember RA is a road course, while Indy is an oval with some road stuff thrown in.

If a street race can be put on in Las Vegas and Monaco, an F1 race can run at Laguna.
I work as a photographer in F1 and I am well aware of FIA giudelines. I have also worked at Laguna many times, as recently as the last alms race there last oct.
The toyota f1 test at laguna a year ago was no fluke. It also proved an F1 car could run well there.
Moto GP racing at laguna proved to the parks drop that a crowd of such size.
Laguna requires far less, FIA approval wise, vs Road America, Mid Ohio, Tremblant, Sebring, Watkins, etc.
By track safety standards, only miller and Indy beat laguna. Are you aware of this? Have you been to the above mentioned tracks?
Moto GP certification was only capable at Indy and laguna due to the run off areas and barrier design. There would need to be improvements, but far less than any other track F1 is considering.

The permits aren't even an issue. Money is 4x Moto GP and attendance/impact is far less.
