2002 CART pole = Da Matta at 1:18:959
2002 F1 pole = Montoya at 1:12:836
The track maps I can find look a bit different with a chicane in the F1 layout that is not in the CART layout (turn 1). So the F1 cars are even faster than it seems. With the CART pole in 2003 only 4 seconds behind the F1 pole, you can tell that Champ Cars haul ***. I hope that series does not die.

Did you see the imax "Superspeedway"?
The rules determine speed. The makers of the video wanted in-car camera race footage with the camera view from various points on the car's nose, cockpit, sidepod, etc.
The problem -- How does a Champ car run competitively with a gigantic 80 lb imax camera mounted on the nose? The simple solution -- Break the rules! They took a previous year's car, cranked up the boost, added more wing (since the car now had hp to burn), and ended up with a car that could run faster laps than the "real" Champ cars.
A great video, and I also hope that CART survives in some form.

...and the only reason the CART cars are any slower really is that they're ~400 lbs. heavier...
...they no longer have the top end horsepower like F1 cars have, but they're turbocharged so they've got probably as much or more torque for launching out of corners. If F1 cars ran on slicks instead of grooved tires, they might get another few seconds a lap though. I *think* the track was revised a bit after last year, so that may account for the couple seconds of difference year-to-year.

In understand the F1 brakes are FAR superior to the CART steel brakes so much so that you can brake
50+ meters later so that would make up a lot of time. The lighter wieght of the F1 cars is of course also a huge factor.

You can probably get similar performance for a single lap or two (i.e., qualifying)...
...but over the course of a race, the carbon brakes would end up making part of the difference each lap.

I know whenever a champ car or F3000 guy gets a test ride in an F1 car and is asked what the biggest
difference is, they always say "the power of course is amazing, but the braking was the most surprising part."
