has anybody used 1 of these traqmate things

They're awesome, I spoke with one of the owners at Road Atlanta last week.
It's not meant for pro teams but everybody from club racers to track day guys can benefit from one. The cool thing is it transfers from car to car in about 10 minutes so you could buy one with 3 or 4 friends. You can talk smack to each other, find out who brakes later and gets on the gas faster, overlay your driving lines and see who's smoother.
I don't know where you are but here in the SE you can get a free demo...they'll install one in your car for a day for free.

i used one last month during an enduro...
...like Krisko mentioned, its very portable, the traqmate rep installed it in my car in under 10 minutes...the data from my car, another car in my class, and a few laps from a pro driver driving probably the best prepared car in my class was all uploaded to the traqmate site. I dl'd all the files and a demo version of the SW and got to check out all the data. I'm considering buying a data acquistion system next year (not sure which one though).

This is equivalent ot a hot lap timer but it does a ton more.
It uses GPS to map out your line across the track. Sensors can tell when you brake and when you accelerate...I think it can tell the degree of acceleration and possibly if you're trail braking. It's pretty nifty.

it can do quite a bit...
...it has built in accelerometers to measure accel/braking and lateral loading...the gps measures your speed and position, you can map out the track (your line) and know how fast you are going at any point on the track...it does segment analysis, friction circle plotting, time vs speed, time vs G's, etc, etc...you can load up data from other cars/drivers to compare...
it also acts as an in-car lap timer if you have the display setup...
its definitely a useful tool and it cost quite a bit less than most of the other data acquistion systems...
