wonder why it looks like the corner worker is making a call into race control just after you pass by

ddg=shinebox racing 04-23-2007 08:16 AM

He's cowering from the shockwave because my car just went supersonic!!!

nord1899 04-23-2007 08:47 AM

wonder if you were last car that run group

but if so, he was calling you in too early.

Maybe another corner saw something with your car and he was calling in a second view.

Please tell me you didn't pay someone for those photos. Take by a friend for free and given to you,

right? : )

What? Let me get this straight. You think you can tell if the corner worker is.....

A) calling him in as "last car" too early?

B) even talking about his car?

All via a picture?

Corner workers talk about all sorts of things. When lunch is, what group's coming out next, that animal on the track, request to use the bathroom, passing clarrifications, the weather, spectators doing something dangerous, etc.

Control or another corner simply could have called him to ask it he could work the next day.

Having a radio to your face or a headset on often has nothing to do with the car passing a corner station.

We used to play trivial pursuit

nord1899 04-23-2007 10:58 AM

Yes

If he was last car, he was not clear of that station to call him as last car clear. Clear means the last car is at the NEXT corner station, not just past yours.

The picture sequence doesn't show any other car in the immediate area. And as the corner worker turns to follow his path, and exits the corner, I see the corner worker raising his hand up to the mic button on the headset. Leading me to believe he is about to key it and start talking.

And well, when I do corner work (well over 30 days last season and will likely do the same this season), you don't ask for things like lunch, or what group is coming out next, bathroom break, etc. When on a radio net, only one person can talk at a time, and so you save the trivial crap for when cars are not on track.

Yes control could have asked him a direct question and that was the time he had available to answer it.

You know, I was just making a fricking comment, not an accusation. Why the hell did you get all uppity about it?

Mike S 04-23-2007 01:41 PM

Uppity? Hardly. I was simply stating the fact that you can't tell what is being said in a

photograph of a guy facing the other way.

Uppity is:

"You know, I was just making a fricking comment, not an accusation. Why the hell did you get all uppity about it?"

I simply found your observation to be odd and against my experience, hence my wondering why you fealt as you did.

I've spent 250 + days per year for the last 13+ at corner stations on about 40+ American tracks and 20+ international. Car clubs, race practice, races, corporate events, IMSA, IRL, ALMS, Champ Car, F!,NASCAR, etc. I'll have 30 days at corner stations by mid May this year, and our season starts April 1 around here.

And yes, I have heard all of I mentioned above talked about. Lunch, pick up, next group passing rules, driver quality issues, etc. Are you aware of some national corner worker rules program that prohibits talking about anything else on the radio? There is certainly no national CW standard of what is allowed and what isn't, when to call a car cleared and when not, etc. All tracks are different. Some track controls allow lots of chatter, others allow virtually none.

I just found it funny that you were critical of a corner worker looking at a car and somehow felt you could tell what he was talking about in the photo. You don't know he's the last car of the group, but you assumed so in both your posts. Where did you get this from?

You don't know if he was diving erraticaly, don't know if he was smoking or if there was an odd noise coming from his car, etc. Do you know if a car in front of him has spun? An animal has entered the circuit? Debris has blown onto the raceway (BIG problem at Willow Springs), etc.

But what I found most odd is the fact that his radio is on his hip in BOTH pictures, and the headset on his head in both as well. There is no way to tell if he is cueing the mic, let alone what he is talking about. With so many different radio systems, there is just no way too tell which he is using. With so many reasons to call race control and no reason to feel he is the last car, I found your assertion he was doing something wrong odd.

Where did I say the corner worker is doing something wrong (outside of last car call around)?

And yes, radio chatter is different based on the race track and the person in control. But even having had a number of nationally licensed controllers in the tower, they all hate one thing, radio chatter. Get on, say your thing, and get off. And if its not about the race or session at hand, wait.

And maybe the GCR or whatever else you plan on using doesn't have a set guideline about when a car is clear, how can you call it clear if its still in your zone of responsibility?

And the reason I thought he was about the key the mic, is that on most double earmuff headsets, the mic button is the right ear, which is where his hand goes in the last pic.

And the fact that in the first pic the corner worker shows up in, his hand is not there, but in the last it is, makes me wonder what he is calling into control for. Perhaps there is something wrong with the car (pics don't show anything), perhaps another corner thought there was and this guy is saying its all clear. It definitely doesn't look like he is changing his flag status which would be a reason to call in.

I wasn't really critical (again outside of last car because that is a huge pet peeve of mine). Just wondering why he was reaching for the mic button.
