Default New rules for restraint systems : Restraints only last 2 years now...then need to be replaced

Reposted from a Spec Miata website post today...

See the October FasTrack.

"Effective 1/1/04, change GCR section 20.8 to read as follows:
8. All driver restraint systems shall meet SFI Specifications 16.1., and shall bear a dated "SFI Spec 16.1." label. The certification indicated by this label shall expire on December 31st of the 2nd year after the date of manufacture as indicated on this label."

A lot of us saw this coming and here it is.

Default Sparco was short on revenue this year....

Sorry...don't know the details on this...I wonder what impact the manufacturers had...lobbying and such...to get this enacted.

Default yeah. interesting to think about the business impact of the rule...

if it's widely adopted, the value of new harnesses actually declines as you get closer to december 31 each year. strange that they wouldn't just make it 36 months from original date of manufacture, rather than 12/31.

Default Wouldn't it be interesting to see them ramp up production in December and cut it off in Jan-Feb...

...that way everyone who is buying gear at the beginning of the year to get their cars ready ends up with a December tag and has to replace it a year earlier. Can the systems really wear out that quickly, esp. when many will be used so sparingly (i.e., only a handful of times a year in some cases) by amateur racers?
