Default R8 racecar...

I dont really follow motorsports but I was curious if Audi could/would use the r8 as a base for any of their racecars?

I was just picturing how badass a DTM R8 would look...

Default It could find a spot in WCGT or Rolex.

I wonder if Dave Maraj (Champion Motors) is thinking about an R8 racecar.

Default Already in the works. Test car has been made. If it comes to fruition, as of right now, it will not

be a factory effort, but a corporately supported car.

Two teams are being considered.

Do you know what series they're considering? DTM? WCGT? Rolex?

Default WC GT and Rolex GT, as Krisko guessed. DTM cars are not street cars and are 4dr sedan based

DTM cars are basically underpowered, over weight F1 cars in design. None are based on production car chassis.

Default Hard to imagine either or both of them NOT being involved. Is Porsche's ownership in VW...

... to blame for their unwillingness to roll out a factory team? A good R8 program could undermine Porsche's dominance of endurance racing with turn-key race cars.

Default Let's not go that far.

Porsche's dominance is well established.

Besides, Porsche owns a pretty small % of VAG.

Default Except in every series Audi has challenged them in in American Racing History,

IMSA in the 80's
World Challenge GT
Pikes Peak
WRC in the 80's in the US and world wide

and

Porsche didn't enter ALMS P1 due to not wanting to go up against Audi.

If Audi decides to put the R8 into GT racing, they will only do so if the car is capable of winning.
