So is everyone using contact pyrometers or laser pyrometers these days...

we compromise and use a laser pryrometer
since we like to take temps of surfaces other than the tires and ones that are hotter (e.g., brakes) than the tires get. We'll have to cough up and get a proper tire pyrometer one of these days.
