Default Car control clinic this Saturday 8/26 in Loudon, NH

The North Atlantic Audi Club (NAAC http://www.naaclub.org) is holding a Car Control Clinic this Saturday in the rear parking lot at NHIS this Saturday (spaces still available, and VW and other brands are welcome). To register for the clinic, visit http://www.naaclub.org. Registration fee is only $99 per person.
Designed to increase your confidence and build new skills, the clinic practices car control skills in a safe, controlled environment.

Come learn more about what you and your car can/cannot do in various situations to keep you safe. This is a relatively low speed event that is especially great for teens or timid drivers!

If you've never been to a track event or autocross, consider taking the clinic as a good first step. The skills and exercises are based on those we perform at our track events and winter schools.

The classroom will teach you the dynamics of driving a car and how your inputs will cause the car to react. Later, under an instructor's supervision, you will put that understanding into practice with exercises designed to expose you to many of the situations you may face on the road.

The exercises are great fun and tough at the same time. They include safe braking, accident avoidance, driving on slippery roads, and over and under-steering situations and how to react to them. Each student has an instructor in the car at all times to coach them through the exercises.

It is a challenge to blast down the course and be expected to brake hard enough at the right time in order to stop in a space no larger than the average garage. Or, imagine driving through the slalom course, weaving around the cones feeling your car swaying as the weight shifts side to side. Then repeat the exercise while holding a water bottle in your hand (to imitate a cell phone), and you'll get an appreciation of the amount of concentration and coordination necessary to drive in a safe and controlled manner.

To top it off, we'll repeat the exercises, this time in the wet to better match the real world. Perhaps the most challenging and the most fun is the accident avoidance exercise (often called the lane toss). This exercise simulates having to make a sudden decision while driving - avoiding a pothole, an inattentive driver, or other obstacle in your lane. You drive towards three open lanes, and at the last moment, one of the lights at the end turns green. You merely have to brake, turn, and then stop in the correct lane.

The instructors running this exercise are truly diabolical in their efforts to trick you into stopping in the wrong lane. It is debatable who has more fun, the instructors or the drivers. The outcome is a powerful lesson in how to react to the unexpected.

The clinic is open to drivers of all experience levels, and is especially instructive for inexperienced drivers. Participants must present a valid driver's license or learner's permit, and sign a liability waiver. A parent must accompany drivers under 18, as well as sign the waiver on their behalf. Participants must provide their own vehicle, which must be in good running order and pass a simple technical inspection, which will include tires, brakes, fluids, lights, and other essentials. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate trucks, SUVs or minivans.

Hope to see you there! Chris

Hey Chris,

My wife is taking the class and I was going to come to help out. Seeing you have spots open I may consider taking the class myself.

What do you think? Do you need the help more? Could my wife and I share our car?

Thanks,
--

Take the class. Sharing a car is fine. The exercises are a lot of fun, and everyone learns something. When else can you toss the car around and get constructive feedback (and no tickets)??

I think we've got a good number of instructors/helpers signed up, so give Mike Collier and email to let him know what you think.

CORRECTION: A valid DRIVER'S LICENSE is required. Not just a learner's permit.

Default Update: we have permission from NHIS to allow drivers with learners permits.

Check out the event page for updated information & requirements for minor drivers.
