doesn't have to be slopeside, but it would be nice. I haven't been up there in a few years. I checked out the Grand Summit but $600 seems steep for 2 nights and lift tickets...
Suggestions?

Fall line condos are the best location. It's a Sunday River property.
Slopeside, so you get ski in and ski out capabilities. Also, it's right by the South Ridge base. Summit hotel is alright too, right by the White Cap base / White Heat.

couple options
there's a small motel in downtown bethel called the Bethel Spa. it's stocked with the finest in '70s decor, but it's clean and is $55/night. about 15min from the mountain.
on the mountain, ask if they have space in the whitecap ski dorms. usually the cheapest route. they have a shuttle to take you to the lodge.
the summit and the jordan grand are the nicest places to stay, with heated outdoor pools etc, but they are pricey. condo owners get the opportunity to stay in the hotels for housekeeping cost if they aren't fully booked, but they usually check ID at the desk.

One of the resort accomodations would be best.
Its a drive into the area if you stay off mountain.
Keep in mind the lift ticket is ~ $70 a day, so factor that into your rates.
