Wife and daughters are going to a bridal shower Saturday July 12th, looking for something to do with the 5 y.o. boy, thinking of heading to NHMS. Whats it like?? Never been to SCCA event.

I've never been to an SCCA race either.
I may be heading up on Saturday, but am 50/50. I have to see how my "work on the house" schedule looks on Friday night and then will decide. I'm headed up there tomorrow at dawn for a Tues/Wed event with COM.
Given your proximity to NHMS, I'd go there and save the kid 6 extra hours of sitting in the car (and you listening to him). I've heard that the regional SCCA race weekends are a hoot.
I don't like the ALMS weekends at LRP because it's a zoo. And if it rains, LRP isn't a very fun place from a spectator standpoint. Bring waders.

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll try the SCCA event, see how it goes. Maybe do a LeMans race...
someday without the little guy.

Have not been to an SCCA event, but went to LeMans at LRP last year
It is a verygood time. LRP is a great track and it's very easy to walk around the entire infield and see the race from many vantage points. They also open the grid and paddock before the race so you can walk out on to the track and get right up to the cars. We took our then 2 year old; he loved it but fell asleep about halfway through the race.
Not sure about the SCCA cars, but if you go to LRP be sure to find some child sized ear plugs for your son. Some of the GT cars are seriously loud (I'm looking at you, Panoz) and you *need* some hearing protection.
