Default Most effective bicycle U-lock, opinions please

Anyone have any ideas what is the best U-bike lock out there? I do not want my Santa Cruz stolen.

Default if someone wants your bike they'll get it, i haven't seen kryptonites sold recently.

you're probably better asking a bike specific forum like mtbr.com or roadbikereview.com

Default a carjack will pop most U-locks and my buddy's bike was stolen when locked w/ a New York chain lock

They cut the chain and not the lock. I use a kryptonite padlock that is round with a large diameter braided cable that most bolt cutters won't get around and lock them up in selective places (I won't leave my mtn bike though).

Best defense is a cheap bike if you've gotta lock it up.

If a skilled thief really wants your bike they are going to get it regardless of how you lock it up.

Default Look at alternatives to U-locks....

I worked in the bike industry for a lot of years, including the development of locks. Essentially bigger is better as far as the "U" portion is concerned. Pay attention to the locking mechanism itself, too. The flat key (similar in nature to your Audi key, vs. a house-type key) is superior to the cylinder key.

Master makes some good locks, and consider a chain vs. a U-lock. The car jack works better on a U-lock because it can be worked against itself. The chain has no such problem. A lot may depend on if you want to carry the lock with you. Chains can get mighty heavy, but can also be thrown over the shoulder.

If you can't find what you want at a bike shop, look at motorcycle shops.

Default What you do in the privacy of your home is your business :-o

Actually, those work well but have limited applications as they won't grab more than the frame or a rim and a street sign. The locks themselves are pretty good, though.
