Default What car should I get the daughter...?

She turned 15 a couple of months back..getting close to that time...my ex-wife stated that she and her new hubby were just gonna get my daughter the local Ford Explorer for sale..$1700. Sorry, but I am not having my little girl driving around in a beater Explorer. So, what should I consider? I want something that has airbags..but can handle a decent size crash and still keep her safe. I am thinking up to $5K. What say you folks?

Default Saturn

Safe, reliable and boring enough not to try to race in it.

Default Volvo wagon...

damn near indestructible and will be very handy to have once she goes off to college and needs to move all her stuff. Maintenance shouldn't be *that* bad.

Default If she had a Miata you'd have a donor car (or she'd have a donor car) and she'd probably be stoked!

(except for the crash safe part... unless she had a cage...)

Default ditto, will need to got to the 850/940, but they are great cars and safe.

Just make sure you get one with turbo, o/w too slow which is unsafe itself. they are also easy to work on though the parts are expensive.
