Default budget & type of bike?

<a href="http://www.chainreaction.com">Chain Reaction</a>
2310 Homestead Rd
Los Altos, CA 94024
(408) 735-8735

This is the shop I use most, as it is where I purchased my first road bike.

However there are other shops I like such as Calmar Cycles in Santa Clara, Velotech in Palo Alto, Break-a-Way in Saratoga, and don't forget Sports Basement in Sunnyvale.

I've always been curious about Walt's in Sunnyvale, just never had the time or opportunity to drop on in.

let us know what you end up with!

Default you may want to add brakes to the first.

you sure you want a fixed/singlespeed? they're not exactly climb friendly if you're not used to it, not to mention keeping pace and track of where your foot is is much more difficult then it sounds - keep in mind you will need to watch your path, environment, etc.

that being said, i ride mine around town every now and again, but for a city bike, a geared contraption makes more sense.

i'd also check out the fuji track pro

<img src="http://www.fujibikes.com/2008/images/bikes/photos_big/trackPRO_4.jpg">

performance had these for $899 iirc. solid components, good feeling bike, and carbon fsa track crank to boot. you may want to change the gear ratio though - and add brakes.

friends gifted me a motobecane messanger a couple years ago, this is the one i scoot about town on.

<img src="http://www.adecadentexistence.com/images/random/motoblack.jpg">

although...not as often anymore since i gave away my platform pedals when i sold my road bike.

Default it will be mainly for getting to and from school all flat through downtown San Jose

this will be my first fixed/SS so I wanted to go to a brick and mortar and try some out.

I am leaning toward a SS because I love the simplicity and the less things to break/fix the better

Default lol...well if you're around cupertino feel free to drop me a note.

i have both track and freewheel cogs. i suggest front and rear brakes on a ss setup, at least a front on a fixed. you can test them out around my neighborhood, so you get more of an 'urban' feel then the parking lot or test ride lot.

i'll guarantee riding fixed has a few surprises that you weren't expecting.

there's also the se lager (skip the draft), giant bowery, schwinn madison (although i felt the finish is a little ghetto), swobo, specialized langsters, lemond fillmore (you may find a 2007/lemond close out as trek and lemond partnership went sour), redline 925, cannondale capo, salsa casseroll, bianchi san jose/pista, masi speciale, cayne uno, etc.

go ride some, form an opinion then go pick something up. you'll want to budget better tires, a new and more comfortable seat, pump, tubes, etc into your purchase too - led lights/blinkers if you don't have those already as well.
