Re: What are the other reasons?
doors are notoriously loud environments which aren't ideal for noise sensitive parts like inductors. Many audio companies battle this by using more insulated inductors or by using filters, but these designs are flawed for SQ.
The better available crossovers, like the Hertz ML CX 2 that I am using for my front doors, have adjustments for tonal control and sound stage (HFC). These adjustments need to be made after the speakers are mounted and all components are operating. Having the crossovers mounted in a convenient location makes for easier tuning. Generally on intricate systems, tuning needs to be a couple times as the speakers break in.
the impact from closing the door can potentially damage the crossover, where if it was mounted outside the door there really isn't much of an opportunity for this type of damage.
having the crossover in the door provides an opportunity for something to rattle with the mid-bass. Just this last weekend I saw a capacitor without mounting glue. It was just hanging by its attachment wires. I would imagine that it rattled a little inside the door. I can't stand little imperfections like that, it would drive me nuts to hear that. The less you have in your doors to rattle, the better.
the last reason is kinda tacky, but most of the high- end expensive crossovers are very attractive, and with a custom install it's pretty cool to showcase them.
