1.8L 150hp vs. 1.8L 170hp
I'm interested in getting an A4 Quattro, my question is ... is there a difference in the engine even though one puts out 20 more hp. I know the engines are suppressed to their true potentials, but if I was to install a turbo kit from company X thats suppose to give me 260 hp on the 150 hp engine, would I get 280 hp on the 2001 and up models with the base engine rated at 170 hp.

no!
there are two basic 1.8T engines the 150's are generally non-dbw. the 170 is dbw and has variable cam. the reason you will end up with 260hp for either is that the turbo is the limiting factor.

IMO and experience, start with a DBW version of the 1.8T.
From what I've read on the responses, you're getting good advice. You're "X" company 260hp turbo kit will net you similar levels, regardless of what engine you start with. I say DBW for a few reasons. In theory it'll have less miles, it's a simpler design, easier to tune(IMO), fewer moving parts, etc.
