For the 1.8T crowd......an oil filter upgrade....
Hey all,
It just occured to me that I haven't yet posted this information for the Audiworld guys, but for those of you looking for a super cheap way to increase oil capacity, and therefore the system's thermal reserve, I present the "big kahuna" oil filter for our 1.8T's.

From left to right: The monster NAPA filter, an S4/A6 sized OEM filter, and the stock 1.8T filter.
This is a NAPA Gold filter, part # 1333. On my 97 A4, my oil capacity is now a full 5 qts, compared to the stock ~4.2 qts. Simply switching to this filter netted nearly an additional quart of oil capacity. Specs all match OEM, including the bypass pressure, etc. Last track day at Lime Rock was well over 100 degrees and humid, and oil temps never exceeded 250F!
Here's another pic for comparision:

The idea came from a good freind of mine, and owner of TyrolSport, a small, but rapidly growing VW/Audi tuning shop based in the heart of New York City. Props to the TyrolSport crew for the idea. These have been in use for nearly a year now on a variety of 1.8T cars that see mucho track time with no issues whatsoever. Give it a try, I think you'll be amazed to see the decrease in oil temps under track conditions, just for the cost of an oil filter :-)
Be aware this is a rare bird, most NAPA stores won't stock it. You'll have to order them, but I typically just grab 4 at a time. Even still, my local store here in RI can get them the next day. There are other filters that are close in size that are readily available, but this is the only one that matches all OEM specs and still has HUGE capacity.
Any questions, email me...

I've been doing simular for years! ;O)
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/6607/filterz.jpg"></center><p>Except I've always used the larger VW Diesel filter.
European Car magazine once did a write-up on it a few years back!
I've used certain makes which are actually 1 inch taller than the Vw filter.
The Napa one, I'll try on my next oil change!
Thanks! :O)
