Default 1990 V8 Quattro - taming a loud custom exhaust

I have a 1990 V8 Quattro that I just bought that has a custom catless exhaust to a really loud muffler. It's 12" long and ~7" wide with dual tips that extend past the rear bumper. I want the exhaust to be a lot quieter without going OE.

Sorry I do not have pics of the underside yet as I haven't had a chance to get it onto a lift and my driveway is covered in ice--so no jacks are being used right now.

The exhaust is dual until it combines into 1 about 3ft before it goes to the muffler. I was thinking about putting a magnaflow 2 inlet to 1 muffler to put in the middle of the exhaust: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...=main&id=11452

It may not be this exact muffler as I haven't measured the diameter of the exhaust piping yet.

I originally wanted to replace the existing muffler, but since I want the flow and the noise suppression I know I need to get the longest/widest muffler I can fit. With the way the exhaust currently bends I cannot get a longer muffler in that spot.

Am I stupid for thinking this is a good idea? Have any suggestions?

Thanks
