Default 1997 A6 quatro hard to start when warm

Car starts fine when sitting for awhile. Its when it has warmed up sometimes the car will start right away and others it cranks for quite awhile and after pushing the gas pedal will it start and you see smoke from the exaust. Just put new plugs and air filter in.

Any information will be great!!!

Check you engine coolant temperature sensor to see if it is reading properly. If it is not the ECM wont give the right amount of fuel to the engine and cause a hard start.

I work on most of my own cars. We just got this audi. How do I check the ECS to see if it is good?
And thank you for the reply!!!

Default Ross tech (VAG-COM) or just replace it

If you have a Ross tech you can go into a measuring value block and watch the coolant temp before start up during start up and while the vehicle warms up and see if the readings make logical sense. if the don't or the reading drops out as the car is warming up then you have an internal short in it and it should be replaced. if you don't have a ross tech or a scan tool then you cant really test it. I would just replace it, they are pretty cheap, around $35. Sorry for the delay in responding.
