Default 97 1.8T ECU vs. 98 1.8T ECU ... are they the same?

I have a 97 ECU and I want to know if 98 ECU would work on the car as well, assuming both are 1.8t, quattro, and manual.

Default If they both have the #'s 557 or 558 with a letter after

then yes it will work the same. You will only have to recode it if the new one is for a tip, the quattro/fwd part does not matter that much since the quattro is not controlled by the ecu.

I called the shop and they gave me 2 #'s. I believe the 2nd one is a "change-over" #...which i think means that if i was to order a brand new ECU the part number would be diff?

Anyways, he gave me these 2 numbers.
8D8 987 557 N
8D0 997 559 BX

I'm assuming a 98 1.8tm ECU with 557 N ending would work?
