Default 99' Passat engine Debate

I have a 99 passat 1.8T and the engine is done, engine locked up. so is the automatic transmission. my question is what do I need to swap it out and put in a v6 with a 5 speed, or is it even worth it? I really dont want to let the car go because my father helped me out with the purchase. or should I just do the swap with another 1.8T with another automatic? Can I still put in a 5 speed with the 1.8T? and what would be the difference in price between both. Also what other parts would I need if I went that route? Im new to the VW world but love the style and the looks of VW's. Thanks

Default Re: 99' Passat engine Debate

V6 Passat and V6 Audi owner here. if you want a V6 with a 5 speed, there's a lot more to it than the engine and transmission. the exhaust is doubled (two sets of pipes, two catalytic convertors, 4 O2 sensors), the ECU is different, etc. you'll drop less money on a used engine for your 1.8t, and there's loads more HP and torque you can get out of that motor than you can with the V6.

so how'd you lock it up? timing belt break?

Default Just find another AEB 1.8T engine. Save yourself the brain strain.

I used to own a '99 Passat before it died in a nasty Highway accident. But the leason to that is there are good used motors out there to be had. And if you wanted to do the 5 speed tranny then you'll need a ECU from the same type of car. ('98 or '99 Passats only)

The potencial output of the 1.8T is greater than the V6 without having to go to extrodanary measures. ** cough, cough, supercharger, cough, cough **

Also, if you haven't found it yet, talk a look at www.passatworld.com

Lots of Good folks there!
