A4 Chipped or not

I just bought my first audi. A used 99 A4 Quattro with the tip transmission. From what i read it sounds like this car should have a rev limiter unless it has a chip. My A4 has never up-shifted for me or stopped me from going over the red line. I have accidentally gone over 7K before without and interference. Does this mean the car has a chip? How can i tell if it is?

Only way to tell if the car has a chip is to open up the ecu and look.

If your car is a tip, does this mean your shifting after 7K or shifting at 6K and seeing the rpms go past 7k during the shift?

chip

There is a slight delay so that sometime when i shift at 6k it doesn't actually shift until after 7k. On ocasions by accident i didn't shift until after 7K and did not feel any type of resistance.

It really is not a delay that makes the rpms still move upward when you shift.

It is the point that your still on the throttle when you do shift a tip. This is the same thing as "speed shifting" a manual trans. When you shift the rpms just have to go up since there is no load on the motor during the shift, so the rpms just shoot upward. This is the reason people with tips shift 1k rpms below redline, unless you really feel like going over redline and taking the chance of blowing up a motor.

So you're saying i should shift 1K before redline?

Yes you want to shift at 6K anyway.

That is the shift point on the manual cars also when still using the K03. The k03 just runs out of power after that point anyway since the boost is dropping.

The red line on my car is not very clear.

It seems that at right about 6200 RPMs the little lines become red but it isn't until 7K that they are long red lines. So I am not sure what that means. Is the red line 6200 or 7K. Why would the little lines be red at 6200 if the redline isn't until 7K?

I am not sure where your redline is. I know the chips move up to about 7200.

But I would not push a tip car past 6K before shifting unless you plan on taking your foot out of the throttle.
