Default All right, I think I made a decision

Unfortunately, I will not be joining the 2.0 conversion guys, at least not yet. I'm going to test the limits of the stock internals with a GT28RS ball bearing turbo. (90% percent sure that's the turbo I want, still have to look at a couple more compressor maps) I'll use the ATP 20V manifold, and build from there. The goal of my first build up is going to be 280 to the wheels for everyday driving and 300 under increased boost.

I already have-

-2.5 inch exhaust (which I can cut and hack and weld new flanges on as needed)
-AWE stage 2 clutch

So my laundry list runs something like this..

-Turbo (with all the gaskets, and lines of course)
-Exhaust manifold
-Injectors
-Fuel pump
-Fuel pressure regulator
-(I know I'm forgetting something)

Then to help manage the added power

-Front mount intercooler
-Brake upgrade

Things not yet figured out

-Chip tuning (the hardest damn part)

Taking everything into account I think it can be done for 5 grand, but as everyone has told me, it adds up quick, so wish me luck. I will also have a lot more questions a long the line so please bear with me. (and yell at me if I get annoying)

A question for you guys now too... Explain Internal or External wastage to me.

Thanks,
Aaron Bryan

Default Internal wastegate is integrated into the turbine housing....

which I think the GT28RS is...

Otherwise, look up Tial external wastegates.

Default Look around on vortex for people running big turbos on the stock chip...

There are quite a few guys there that are simply running a diode and matched injectors and MAF housings and putting down some huge numbers. For some reason it doesn't seem like it should be that easy to me, maybe I am missing something or maybe they figured it out. Either way, there is some good stuff to read there. Sounds like a good setup by the way, but I'd want the gt30r personally.

Default I debated the GT30R...

But in the end, even with a light weight flywheel, and FMIC, I think it'll be too big for a daily driver. And if I want.. I can always upgrade later

Also, I want think a lot of the guys on Vortex are running those numbers with FWD cars, its going to be a little harder to put power to the ground in my Quattro

Default Fuel pressure regulator isn't really necessary...

I think the VWs have 3bar stock, whereas we have 4bar stock. I'm not a big fan of 5bar FPRs, the money is spent better elsewhere.

Default Re: I debated the GT30R...

People on vortex are still putting down around 360 wheel with stock and internals and k03 chips, which would easily translate into 300+awhp.

Default 378 on stock internals....

I really think that is past the limits of stock internals. Anything 350+...watch out.
I have 2 other cars....so its not really an issue if my 1.8t blows up.
If you are looking at a gt28rs, dont be afraid to consider a t3/t4 50 trim with a stage 3 comp. About the same size as a gt28 (maybe alittle bigger) less then half the price.

Default I think that you made a good call with the GT28RS

There is a local GTI running around with a GT-30 on it and he doesn't hit full boost untill over 4000rpm. That just isnt fun for a street car that you have to drive every day.
