Amsoil or K&N air filter to boost HP?
#2
Amsoil makes air filters?
I don't think just an air filter will boost hp and if it does it will be very minimal. But if it is something you have to have, I'd go with K&N just because=)

Air filter alone is no help. You need to do exhaust, too.
It's one thing to be able to get more air into the engine but you really can't if the engine is still constricted on the exhause side.

Depends on the car....
Hiya,
On cars that rely on cylinder "vacuum" to pull air into the cylinder, an aftermarket filter can make a difference, if the factory (usually paper) filter is poor in quality to reduce manufacturing costs. On a turbo car, especially an Audi with its low psi set up, the turbo is capable of drawing air through all but the worst quality filters. There have been some accounts of factory paper filters distorting or tearing under higher boost conditions. Go to a high psi setup, and the filter will become as important as the NA setup.
Aftermarket filters are nice, in that, they are cleanable and reusable. In the days of being all environmental this is a plus. Much debate over the K&N being too "open" of a design (re: lets dirt in too) can be written off as two of the most abusive users, the US military and most professional racers, use the K&N or equivalent.
I've run K&N for 8 years with no problems on NA cars, doubt it will do much for my still stock A4. Pop a professional racers hood and you are more likely to see a K&N than anything else.
Exhaust is the real restriction in the Audi A4, on my Integra it was the intake. I know there is a big difference between a $25 filter and a $500 exhaust, but if hp is your concern, go here first.
Cheers!
Michael

Installed Cone and removed airbox. Noticable difference!

93 90 V6- Removed factory airbox, and installed the Cone. Very noticable differance in performance! I would say "mild" enhancement.
I've found results vary between makes.

Depends on car/filter
turbo cars will have a less of a result than a nonturbo car. Most likely, a panel filter won't make a difference in any car, but a Cone filter definatly does make a difference.
I recently installed a cone filter on my 95 A6, simmilar to miktips but he got a different filter. (His is open ended, which is probably better than my K&N). I definatly feel a great difference, changes how the car drives quite a bit.

Style12v,
Do you mind if I email you directly to get more information? I have a 1996 A6 2.8 so I suspect you might be able to give me some advice.
