Default is the any difference(air flow wise) between cheap cone filter and a brand name cone filter?

let's say i get a K&N style, no brand cone filter for $10 on ebay and a genuine K&N cone filter, is there a difference air flow wise??

i am going to customake a intake setup, and need a cone filter desperately.
i should get one which is 3" inlet right?
also do i need the breather filter?

Default Unless you plan on putting that cone filter where you can get some fresh air . . .

you will see little or no gains and will end up better off by modding your OEM air box and air inlet.

Cone filters do no good sucking in the hot engine bay air.

If you mod your OEM intake and air box you will see bigger gains. In the 12v Development Forum, we have added ram-air hoses to the air box and/or ram-air extensions to the inlet. We have eliminated all the air flow restrictors and distrupters by shaving them down and/or replacing parts. We have replaced the OEM MAF screens with velocity stacks. We have replaced ribbed accordion hoses with smooth silicone hoses.

In short, we move a lot of cold air through our modded OEM air boxes.

The only way you can effectively use a cone filter on the A4 is to extend it down to the lower grill of the bumper, modify the lower grill for air flow, and move the horns and other stuff in your way around for maximum space.

If you do end up getting a cone filter, make sure it has an internal velocity stack built-in, because that will smooth and increase the air flow.

No, sucking more hot air is still a bad idea.

Default guy on vortex did some experiments modifying a stock box...

and a modified stock box with an extra air inlet grabbing air down by the bumper vents flowed more air than a cone filter

Default just modify the stock box.

most people dont know the stock box has a secondary air intake built in. the picture shows this port as seen from the wheel well. the foam directs the air flow from under the box from the area around the turbo. this is to help the car warm up faster on cold days, and if snow blocks the primary intake from the front. one could easily remove the port flap, and redirect the foam to grab air from the front of the engine bay.

the stock box would flow alot more air then, with out drastic cutting up of the stock box.

Default Well yah, but he's talking VS's....

...and that crap. VS's don't work that well in turbo engines becasue the air moves so much faster. You have to make long VS's and test that crap out of them to get it right.

Also, larger intake tubing is not always optimum on turbo's.

Yes, I think we all know that hot air sucks.

So again, turbo's are completely different.
