Default Any downside to going for a 3" turbo-back on a 1.8T?

Thinking of having a custom 3" turbo-back exhaust made for my 1.8T sometime in the not too near but not too distant future (~6wks). Are there any downsides to going with an exhaust this big (assuming a high-flow cat goes with it)? Is there enough clearance for an exhaust this big?

This exhaust would be on a totally stock 1.8T for the summer, and then one of the big turbo kits would go in (PES/APR/ATP, haven't decided).

Default I had a little trouble when changing the cat.

If you go with a big turbo you likely will change the cat. You might want to hold off on the exhaust until you get the final turbo/cat on the car. My perf. cat was shaped a little differently and the flex-pipe in my Borla exhaust was stressed into breaking. To get the best fit you may wanna do it all together.

Good luck,
Rich

Default

relocate the cat to under the car. This makes a 3" downpipe an easier install.

Default And this would make Rich's concerns moot, right?

When I change the turbo and/or cat, I could just have another DP fabricated.

What about the cat's functionality? Wouldn't that be affected since it would be getting cooler exhaust so it might not work as well?

Default no, you should definently wait until you have the turbo setup that you are gonna go with...

ummm cats functionality? Like how good it protects the environment? I have no idea. If you are worried about that, then you shouldn't be modifying your car at all.

Default In that case, it sounds like I'm gonna have a whole new car when school starts up again :-)

Well, not entirely new. Just new suspension, double the stock HP, new center console. Still will be rollin on bling bling stock 15s :-)

Default Euro nav system

That'd involve updating my climate control to the 98.5+ position (and maybe new parts if they're needed).

If I got new rims, I could no longer make the claim that the front brakes in the Saleen S7 are literally the size of my wheels :-)

Default Why not just make a downpipe back system....

and then when you go to a big turbo, have a downpipe and cat installed then.

Default Can't speak to the ATP kit as I've not seen one .. If you go with the APR Stage III kit the supplied

high flow cat teminates at precisely the same location as the OEM cat. The PES kit uses a connector that will align with the OEM cat and / or PES' optional high flow cat. In both instances a fabricated 'cat back' exhaust that aligns with your current OEM cat will align with the kit's terminus.
