Default Underdrive pulley: Never on the crank . . .

Please do searches, many people have written similar info on this topic for a couple of years.

MikTip is very clever; he used an underdrive pulley on the power steering--a low pressure system to begin with.

However do no use aftermarket pulleys on the crank, because they usually lack proper dampening. You can completely kill your engine over the long run by running a lightweight/underdrive pulley that fails to properly dampen the harmonics, i.e., vibrations, on the crank.

Dinan--the BMW tuner--once had a big write-up on its website about why it did not make lightweight/underdrive pulleys while other BMW tuners did. Their "white paper" made a lot of sense. See if you can find it.

Default Re: Underdrive pulley: Never on the crank . . .

Check the pulley you are considering replacing to see if it has a harmonic dampener integrated within the pulley.

The AEB 1.8T crank pulley has no harmonic dampening (I presume the factory knew what was needed when the engine was designed->flywheel is a dual mass unit). I've been running a UR underdrive pulley for about 4yrs without issues.
