APR pinging issue when transitioning from vacuum to boost under load
This has been bugging me...I haven't vagged the car yet, but I'm hearing some pinging when going from vacuum to boost. For instance, if I back off the gas to decelerate at 50mph in 5th and then mash the gas, I'll get some pinging at about 0psi. I don't get any pinging at high boost or even moderate boost. It's pretty strange.
I wonder if I'm going lean. I have an intake that is a bit close to the maf (I thought I gave it enough space), but I may pull it a bit further away from the maf to see if this improves the reading. I'm also going to be changing my plugs in a few hundred miles to the NGK BKR6E's - I'll see if the current plugs are fouled soon enough.
Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions as to why I'd be pinging at no/low boost and not at high boost? Anything else to check? TIA

i never had it before i got the chip. it sounds like a rattle or a piece of gravel in a tin can
i got a second opinion from a friend who has a turbo 240sx, and he agrees it's detonation. it's light, but it's still detonation. i havne't really heard anyone with this before. any ideas what to check/replace?
if it was the maf, wouldn't I be having more problems at all boost levels, but esp at high boost?
if it's a leak to the fpr, wouldn't the problem get worse with more boost?
the only thing i can think of is the spark plugs. maybe the chip runs a lot of timing off boost for throttle response and the plugs aren't holding up too well when I get back on the gas.
more opinions would be appreciated. thanks

I'd look at plugs first I think. What plug are you running and what gap?
If you are running a (especially 'homemade') intake I'd look at that as well. Did you leave the screen on the MAF? Is it possible the MAF is too close to a bend or subject to turbulence? How close to the BPV return is the MAF?

i'll be looking at the plugs soon...i have to special order the new ones
for some reason, no one around me stocks the BKR6E's. I'll take a look at the plugs in 2 weeks to see if they're pitted/fouled. they are just the oem plugs...i have no idea if they've been replaced by the dealer or not. I wouldn't be surprised if they have never been touched. I'll be switching to coppers.
As for the intake, i have about 3" before the MAF from the base of the filter...i figure this may not be enough. I left the screen on. However, I never had any problems with this at stock levels and I question why I don't have more problems at higher boost levels. The maf is in the stock location along with the bpv return, so i don't suspect the bpv return is causing problems. If it's the intake, I'd guess it's the distance between the maf and the filter...i'll test it out in the near future.

Those don't do jack. A 'point' in the jargon of those is 1/10th of an octane point.
Running higher octane fuel may help but it would be merely masking the problem. Do you have EMCS? If so are you sure you are on 91 chip and not 93?
Folks run AMS, GIAC and APR (among others) chips on craptane without pinging so I'd suspect that if you are getting pinging it is something specific to your car.
