Boost Controllers vs Chip tuning experiences.
I reasearched around at the time and found the Apexi AVC/R one of the best units to get.
Immediate impressions was it did seem to make the turbo come in earlier, and had variable boost control.
However, drivability and smoothness was questionable, it was installed at the same time with fully rebuilt engine with many mods and larger turbo, so for quite some time i put the drivability down to the many mods, mind you a performance minded person would see no problem, but going for a sunday drive with family was another matter, and found the either you had to feather the accelerator to try to drive smoothly, whilst part throttle about 25% open would cause the turbo to spoolup and try to launch the car.
I decided to remove the Apexi Boost Controller all together and run on Soley GIAC Software for (larger turbo, injectors, Euro ECU).
Well, Car is smooth again!
Now i can part throttle with out trying to take off on me, Stabbing at the accellerator, No noticable difference in power or spoolup.
"Proper Limp Mode function of ECU is restored".
As with a after market Boost controller, none that i have looked at have anyway of knowing the ECU is in Limp Mode, so they still try to supply full boost when ecu has detected a problem, so boost should be cut to a minumum.
I always thought from years ago, any aftermarket controller is not as good as a well programmed ecu, this experience has confirmed to me that that belief is correct.
The only reason to add on aftermarket controllers to ecu in my opinion, is either the tuner cannot program the ecu correctly or program it fullstop.
Or ECU has been locked or made tamper proof.
But if the Expertise is there to reprogram ECU, that is you best solution.
If i went to a quieter exhaust and replaced my twin plate puk clutch, the car would be far different from stock to drive around daily, with just a **** load power when you floor it.
So before you think about adding aftermarket boost controller, fuel controllers etc, lookinto getting it all tuned corectly in you chip, you will end up with a far better drivable car than with all that crap installed.
Mods.
GT25/35 Turbo 400HP model.
GIAC "Custom Software"
3" Turbo back Exhaust
Shrick Cams
Ported Head
Slight Porting on intake manifold
JE Pistons
APR/Pauter Rods
ARP Rod Bolts
Custom equal length tubular T304 stainless Manifold.
APR Twin Plate Puk Clutch with Aluminium Flywheel
Greed Speed FMIC
S4 Bumber
330mm Rotors
AP Racing 4 pot calipers
OZ 17x8 Wheels
Bailey Valve
T5 Intake
PES MAF Housing.
Probable a **** load of other crap i can't remember.
S4's no competition, RS4 very close by experience!

Re: Who did your exhaust manifold?
Performance exhaust here in Melbourne.
They are not really interested in doing more, too many man hours.
I tried a while ago to get another one.
