Can anyone tell me the most common causes of cooling system failure........
I'm trying to diagnose the reason for my cooling system failure in my 2000 S4. From what I can tell, there are no leaks, and on gross inspection the system seems intact. I did have a recent downpipe install, but I'm told that that has little to do with engine temp. I suppose there could be a disconnect in a location that I can't see....but that would lead to a leak, right? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you lose fluid, or is it just not cooling?
If the latter, it could be the thermostat. In case you don't know, this restricts flow when the coolant is below a certain temperature to allow the engine to warm up. When they fail, they either stick open or closed. If it sticks closed, the coolant doesn't flow through the radiator and the engine overheats.
Good luck,
Rich
