Default Clicking 1st gear - seaching the archive, its seems to be a broken gear

Firstly I tried posting in the A4 forum. But no sucess. I was hoping people in this forum are more mechanically minded.

Can I continue driving with this problem?

How hard is it to fix? Can I rip out the gearbox and just replace the 1st gear? Or do i need a replacement box?

Any idea on the $$$?

Advice welcome!

Thanks.

Default If it's just the gear, not the mainshaft, it can be rebuilt for less.....

But that's usually not the case. If the gears broken, chances are the mainshaft is too, or has been damaged by the broken gear at the least. When the mainshaft is bad, the $$$ goes up significantly for a rebuild. The mainshaft alone is pricy, and the measurements to install it, correctly, well, I guess it normally doesn't happen because of the price. Try Dad's auto.

Default Yes - you do

I have emailed a few wreckers - maybe I can get a 2.8 box(longer gears). But it seems a waste for 1 measly (still working but noisy) gear.

Ill talk to you about yours this sat - if you are coming.

Default Hey, why don't you get adventurous and retrofit a V8 torsen rear end back there?

It's 4.11, and much better than having it open back there.

Just a thought...
