Default Cylinder misfire confirmed and CEL is (finally) on, how long can I safely drive my car?

A fellow audi enthusiast recently diagosed my car with a vag, and found random misfire in cylinder 6. He suspected the cause of misfire to be spark plugs (car is at 50k and the plugs have probably never been changed). I've got new plugs but is waiting for the torque wrench to arrive in order to change it. How long can I safely drive my car without worrying about serious damage?

BTW, does it take this long for the CEL to turn on after a misfire's been detected? Or is this the car's way to say the misfire is getting worse?
