Default Definitive (hah!) synthetic oil thread...

In light of Mobil 1's recent change, I want to start a thread that won't disappear on the S4/A4 forums in 3.3 nanoseconds.

What is the actual change in Mobil 1 as you can buy it now (0w30, 5w30, 10w30) in retail stores?

Is the 0w40 Mobil 1 a different animal altogether? Better? Where are you people getting it?

What is the change in API's standard?

Other brands? Amsoil's story? Anyway to buy it without feeling like you're in an Amway revival meeting?

I spoke with a guy at Royal Purple and he said API allows up to 23% of an oil to be mineral based, but still be called a synthetic. He said their base was pure synthetic, but their additive mix was in a mineral oil, so theirs isn't totally pure synthetic (he declined to answer what percent synthetic the final blend is).

Default Yep. I used Motul for my first change, but it was a real PITA to buy...

...I got it because it was a fully synthetic W40 oil. I want to say it was 5W40, but dont quote me on that. When Mobil1 came out with the 0W40, I was all over it because Im a long time Mobil1 follower.

I picked up a few cases (and a damn ticket) from J.A.M. Distributors on Mykawa in Houston, based on a rcommendation from Lance P.

Default Treating your car too good is like dooming it to die.....it's like the saying the good die young=P

What do you think about the new oil changes? Are you still a Mobil follower? Personally, if I can't buy an oil on the shelf at Walmart then it will never see the inside of my engine. Good thing Walmart carries 5W30=P I think I'm going to stick with Mobil despite the changes until somebody proves that the new oil is hurting something or not doing it's job effiently. Afterall, it's just oil...my step-bro buys SuperTech dino oil for $0.87 a quart...30W...I'm not man enough yet to put this in my car.

Default I still have a few cases of the 'good stuff', but I'm fine with the changes...

...because they look relatively innocent. Mobil1 is still light years beyond regular dino oil, or even blends.

The one thing I will be changing afer my 20K service is that I'm going to 5K intervals. Maybe its overkill, but I'm just not comfortable letting my oil go 10k (and five or six months) between changes.

I treated my last car (94 Beretta) to synthetic oil and tranny fluid while I had it - which was 7+ years and 100k+ miles. I beat the living snot out of that engine and transmission and they never skipped a beat.

I think dino oil is more of a death sentence than giving it the good stuff.

Default I think they've got as good of an answer there as you're going to find...

...especially on pages 4-5 of the thread. I'm sticking to M1 0w40 and SuperSyn looks good to me. I might consider Redline at some point though.
