do exhausts get quieter with time?

do exhausts get quieter with time?
I had the local muffler shop install a performance muffler in my wife's 1999 Chevy Suburban.
Needless to say, she thinks its too loud and wants it OUT!
I don't blame her, the droning is very loud between 1600 and 2000 RPMs. Outside of that range, it has a nice rumbling and is acceptable. Inside that range, the whole cabin seems to resonate.
Since the shop is closed this weekend, I'd thought I'd ask if anyone knew of a solution or do I just need to try out a different muffler. I think this one was a magnaflow.

No, not usually. Resonance in 1600-2000 range is the biggest problem with aftermarket exhausts.
Some mufflers (OEM and CORSA, come to mind) tune out this resonance. Often a resonator can be added to help, but it has to be tuned to the system. The 'Burb probably didn't have a resonator stock, so it would be lots of trial and error to find the appropriate one and the best location.
Consider a complete cat-back system, but check with the manufacturer about the 'boom' during cruise. A less expensive alternative might be replacing the current mufffler with something like a DynoMax SuperTurbo. I'd stay away from the Ultraflow. Even with resonators, they have some of the boom you have.
The good thing is the Superturbo is under $50 in most sizes, and they flow like crazy. Muffler P/N 17673 looks like the one.

try having them add a resonator...............
it is sort of like a mid muffler, it would probably get the noise levels just where you/wife want them.
a buddy of mine had one added to his custom exhaust for 120$ it got rid of the droning in the cabin & gave the exhaust a mellow sound

new muffler installed
The shop put in a new muffler that is closer to OEM. I didn't hear the noise driving home so I think the problem is resolved. The new muffler is 'lower' performance but still sounds better than stock.
