Default Schrick makes good cams.

They have an enviable reputation.

Here's an article about one in a 10V:

http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/hotrod.htm

I think the 272 would be usable on the street. Not too rough an idle. I used to run 268s on the street all the time. 280 is a bit rough but doable as well. That would be a top end cam, however, so you will not gain (and might lose) some bottom end. Playing with cam timing via an adjustable sprocket will help here.

Default Waste o money, although I agree that Sch. makes good cams...

The 10v turbo camshaft (from a junker) and replacement new lifters is the way to go. Adds top end and doesn't hurt the bottom, for almost no money. (Discussed endlessly for the last 15 years on Audifans.) For the cost of a full cam kit you can get into a used turbo motor (lots more fiddlin').

Put a snorkel on the air bypass to the airfilter, and a good mandrel exhaust and you will max out the non-turbo version.

Default I've pondered about changing the cams on my 1.8T engine but I think it's a waste of time...

On a turbocharged car mainly because the manifold is pressurized above atmospheric most of the time. The torque profile can be varied with the manifold pressure as oppose with the cam profile. But if you have a normally aspirated car you might want to think about it.

Default THat's interesting, as the directory on the web site says "schrick" How's that work?

I didn't know Crane made much for import cams, but I haven't been keeping up.

Default Boost is not the cure all for engine tuning!

I have heard people say "why port a turbo engine" or "why cam a turbo engine" sure, you can ram in a bunch more air with forced induction, but the cam profile STILL DETERMINES THE BASIC BEHAVIOR OF THE MOTOR.

Sure, percentage wise you won't see as big a gains. You still see gains! you want the air to have as smooth a journey into the motor as you can, and get in as much as you can. Boost pressure does not equal molecules of air! They are roughly equivalent, but a good engine flows MORE air with LESS boost, because of less pumping loss.

With a turbo motor, your cam options are more limited, because you want to limit overlap so you don't push fresh charge out of the exhaust pipes. Higher lift still helps, and changing the lobe center and the lift events can have a big influence on the character of the motor.

I know what you are saying, you can spend $600 on cams for the 1.8T and get maybe 10-20 hp. Not good on the cost/benefit sheet. Please don't discount the need to have a harmonious engine just because there is a hair dryer hanging on the side of it.

Default I agree with all your comments. The cost to performance ratio is poor for...

street use imo. Changing the turbo is a more cost effective way of getting big power imho unless you're diehard racer and want every bit of power you can get

Default Um, read the URL again. It says Schrick right in the URL. That's what I was looking at.

Thus it led me to believe that the cams were made by Schrick.
