Default ECU Compatibility - 2 many ???s

I plan to do my chip upgrade with a spare ECU to my 2001.5 1.8T - Would you guys recommend buying a brand new ECU for the spare or is it possible to pull one from a wrecker?
If getting it from a wreck - what model years are compatible?

If by chance I do get a wrecker ECU - should i drive with it around for a while and send that for the chip programming?

Or if I order the chip with the spare ECU - is it really necessary to still send my existing ECU in for programming or do they just program their new ECU?

Sorry to be so wordy - but you regulars on this board are most well informed.

TIA, Aris

Default Ask your tuner...

They should have answers to most of your questions.

I dont think anyone has figured out if or how an earlier model year ECU could be used in the '01 so dont count on finding a second hand unit you can use.

Default Check the part # of the ECU. They must match to use a spare ECU

Even if it is the same year and model, they have different part #s at times
