Default ESP without traction control (ASR) on a 2001 A4 1.8T, possible????

I bought a 2001 A4 1.8T fwd 150hp, and the dealer and the invoice say that the car comes with the esp system but dosen't have traction control. There is no button to turn esp off or light to tell you it is working, how can I be sure? If it doesn't have ESP I will talk to audi and get some money back or something. Can ASR be added? I made the rear of the car come loose on some dirty part of a road but not sure if ESP can completely control the car on the dirt, another thing is that if you try (not too hard) you can make the car understeer a LOT, and I tought ESP was suppose to help this.

Thanks and I posted here since you guys are more technical.

PS I live in Mexico so we get euro spec audis.

Default i believe the terms are the same...

my owners manual has ASR listed and describes it the same as ESP.

Default But ASR is anti slip and works only with front brakes on acceleration. ESP is all brakes with a

G sensing computer along with steering input and gas and brake. My sister's 98 Passat has an ASR switch. The 00 TT I drove had one too. I imagine it should have a switch to turn it off if it is equiped. Our 01 TTR has an ESP switch so again I imagine there should be a switch to turn it off when one doesn't want it.

No switch, no option installed? curious if they changed anything.

Default That's exactly what I tought but.....

What the dealer said is that since it is not an option (it is standard) the swicht to turn it off isn't installed.

Does ESP control understeer as well? Could it be installed without traction control (asr)??
Can a scanning tool check to see if the system is installed or is there something that I can check visually?

Thanks a lot

Default Yes, you can use VAG-COM

My invoice shows the car does not have ASR but you can log with VAG-COM and watch it kick in (measurement block 120). If you have ESP there are sensors for steering wheel, yaw rate & lateral accel. All of this can be monitored with VAG-COM. Even if you don't have a switch you should still have a dash light to show when it is active. Yes ESP works against understeer as well as oversteer but this does not mean it will prevent either.
