Default finally got my vortrag hood..

it finally came.. my carbon fiber vented hood from turbo5 via vortrag. it was sitting in this warehouse in newark nj for the past 3 and a half weeks! i opened the box which was in pretty bad shape..
<img src="http://users.cnmnetwork.com/~redline/images/hood/hoodbox.JPG">
<img src="http://users.cnmnetwork.com/~redline/images/hood/hoodbox2.JPG">
so i took out the hood and noticed these two HUGE cracks on the rear.. what the hell!!!
<img src="http://users.cnmnetwork.com/~redline/images/hood/hoodcracks.JPG">
so heres some pics of the hood..

<img src="http://users.cnmnetwork.com/~redline/images/hood/hoodtop.JPG">
<img src="http://users.cnmnetwork.com/~redline/images/hood/hoodunder.JPG">
its carbon fiber thats been gelcoated white.. donny's is gel coated red.. strange huh?

well.. it might take me a little while to get used to the way this thing looks.. its a little "ricey", but im sure i'll learn to love it..
oh, i forgot to mention.. THIS ISH IS LIGHT AS F*CK! almost too light! it feels really brittle and fragile.. hope after i get it installed i dont come across any flying rocks or debris!

Definatly a smooth looking hood. Post a picture when you have it installed. How much did it run you? (actual cost + painting if needed)

Default CF hood strength

The carbon hoods are light but very strong. The Vortrag CF race hood that was on the One Lap of America S4 was so strong that it survived an incident at one of the tracks during the One Lap. (This was even written about in the January 2001 Max Power article about the Vortrag One Lap car.)

The driver forgot to latch the race hood pins and the hood came up when it was racing on the track and the wind caught it. It opened up into the windshield, broke the windshield and dented the roof, yet the CF hood was not damaged. Talk about strong! That race hood hood was even lighter than the hoods with full undercore, like yours.

Just remember, CF hoods ARE NOT heavy stock steel hoods, so you have to make sure to latch them and care for them properly. This means you need to watch for wind gusts. I keep a hand on mine when the hood is open, if it is windy.

As for the vented hood being 'ricey'. I strongly disagree. This hood is far more sleek than any American vented hood OEM junk I see on the roads (GM/Pontiac -- yech!) I think the Vortrag hood is done tastefully, similar to how other European cars with vented hoods, i.e. Mercedes, etc. It's definitely a functional advantage to have the vents lowering under hood temps....a bonus is that it looks mean.

Best regards,
-Cathleen

Default I was there when that happened....

And can vouch for the validity of the story. I was helping the guy fix a ripped intake boot when the wind gust came. Very strong hood.
