Has anyone changed an automatic tranny to a manual in an A4
I own a 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro Automatic (non-tiptronic). There is something wrong with my transmission, and it will be replaced under my extended warranty but I would like install a manual transmission instead of an automatic. Apart from the installation of the transmission, a clutch pedal, clutch, ECU coding change, what else needs to be done, what am I missing?

How about Money....
Who is footing the cost of the manual tranny?? Warranty???
Not being smart, just very interested as I do not know the price of the auto, but the Manual gearbox is very pricey...

Re: How about Money....
I have an extended warranty, my tranny is covered. There's something wrong with my tranny and it's going to be replaced. I thought I'd switch it for a manual. Obviously i'd have to pay for the installation of a clutch, pedal, etc, but I'd like to know what else needs to be done so I can get an idea is this is feasable or not.

Talk to Todd @ Vortrag but...
I know that it is MUCH more involved than just a clutch pedal and some software. A whole new pedal box must be constructed. Todd has all but said he would never do the conversion again (it took quite some time). I'm positive a dealer would not pay for this.

Actually, you are being smart...
... just not in the Australian "smart = wiseass" sense of the word. It would be easier, cheaper, etc. to just trade for a manual car (plus you wouldn't have down-time on a car that might have longer than expected timelines for conversion or might be your only car...)
But there are always people looking for the next "project"...

It's not something that is cost effective compared to selling and buying what you want . But
for the A/S8s where you can not get a manual in the states it is the only choice you have
