Had a huge one in a GMC Typhoon always had evaporation problems (Had to keep filling it)
and its heavier. IMO it only really helps at stops and with spal fans behind them sucking air thru them but all in all I think air/air is easier and as effective choppo |
I think I remember AWE saying that were working on one for the
1.8T back when I dynoed there this summer. Not sure where they are with that. It would be an SMIC I believe.

Air to water is much more efficient but the trade off is........
more added weight and more components that could fail.

Corky Bell devotes significant time to discussing this in Maximum Boost...
my interpretation at this point is that a Air to water IC's have a *potentially* massive advantage due to the 14x greater heat transfer cooefficient between water and aluminum than between air and aliminum...but that asssumes 100% efficiency, which only occurs in marine applications where fresh water is unlimited, or in drag cars where the cooling is only required for a few seconds, and make strong use of evaporation.
Water based IC's only become attactive where there is insufficient space for an air-to-air application. Every air-to-water application i see are in situations where there is no, or very poor front space for a air-to-air IC to work (like a 6 series BMW)...so you can use an oil cooler, in essence, as the front mounted heat exchanger for an air-to-water system. What happens is that, in time, the water-to-air system gets soaked, to that it revers to nothing more than an air-to-air unit in which the intake charge is carried to the cooling core via water, rather than air (the water gets warm or hot, and then its no better than air-to-air). So if you really want to cool your charge on a street car, go with a air-to-air and then contemplate water injection (which Corky considers to be dangerous and crude, btw). Cheers, Sameer |
