Default has anyone treid to put a old 5 cyl 20v in an a4?

I dont know much about engine swaps but it seem like it could be an option. more displacement then the 1.8 by at least .5 liter with some being built as large as 2.6.

This project would require lots of custom work in terms of hardware and software tuning but would the engine physically fit in an a4 engine bay? a motor like this could be built for around the same cost as a 2.0t motor so why not go bigger? however the stand alone would add significat cost to the project. then again stand alone would simplify tuning an engine dyno before being installed.

new 20v 5cyl startup

True. Champagne Motors in Denver has done it. They use it as their rally car.

Default do you know how far?

I assume this is because the block is longer?

a few inches is no a big deal but @ some point the front wheel drive shafts might run into clearence issues. what a great a execuse to make a light weight drive shaft out of ti!

Default the motor is very expensive, turbo kits are very expensive

the motor is very heavy and a bitch to work on. my 2.8 trans wont bolt up and swaping a s4 6 speed is a very expensive and crappy trans. if i did swap i would also need to change front spindles, axles, rear diff, exhaust, turbos, programing wire harness.

I'm not a fan of the motor to begin with for all that effort and money I would rather do something diffrent.

Default Your 2.8 trans would too bolt up.

and turbos can be had for $2500. For about $5000-6000, you'd have a complete engine, new gaskets, maintenance parts, and all that power. Well worth it, over the 5 cylinder IMO.

But I totally understand if you're familiar with the 5 cylinders. I'm the same way about everything BUT them. ;-)

Default ok , my bad on the 2.8 trans but I'm still screwed when it comes

to the front axles are a diffrent size for sure and so is the final drive in the rear diff. I think this would require swaping axles and spindle to s4 parts if the inner axle mount is the same size and i bet it's not. custom axles arnt a big deal but add it all up and its going to be very expensive and i'll still have stock internals. not to mention changing the ecu the wire harness.

I dont really know anything about the 5cyl or any engine for that matter I just think it could be a good option when you factor weight, displacement, tuning and overall cool factor. they've light, not super expensive and can built up as one hell of a mean 2.6T. the most expensize part would be stand alone. I no any idea where to get a manafoldand turbo for a reasonable price.

I gotta find out more about that pikes peak a4 with the 5cyl

Default 5 cyl 20V cheap?

I think you'll find the 20V 5 cyl stuff is pretty expensive. I think its more expensive than equipment for a 1.8T or 2.7TT. Both of those motors are still in production so parts are available. The aftermarket support is stronger for those 2 motors. The only good thing about the 5 cylinders is the RS2 and the vast Audisport legacy which shows the potential of the motor. It also lays out a pattern language which is useful for builders to follow.

The 2.144 liter race motors have made very high HP per liter figures. Around 300 hp per liter.

Default its not cheap at all.

I just thought I could get a long block out of one of the older cars without paying a ton. I know the performance parts are hard to find but I'm willing to hunt for them.

the main reason I wanted to do this was for the crazy high HP/ per liter figures and the motors impressive racing Heritage.

now that I see how difficult it would be to install this motor and keep it a daily driver I need to find another option. I guess I'm back to the 2.0t

I'm still very interested in learning about the double wastegate setup i've heard about for the 5cyl motor
