Help: any reports of ECUs being damaged during a chip installation?

it can certainly happen. de/re-Soldering is not a perfect process.
I think more commonly, you could damage the chip itself, which would just require a new chip. The chip could be fried during the programming phase and would require a new chip. For instance, you could be programming the chip and have a power outage
